This is the mistake that keeps the final answer from being accepted. The two names contain the same words in a different order, and only one of them is the man the puzzle wants.

Read the Partner Clue
E.C. was called a "confirmed bachelor", and Samantha grew up with E.C. and his roommate Mr. Miller.
A phrase in the diary matters more than the person's name.
WHY THIS CLUE MATTERS
The result is historical context, not a person. Read together with the diary's word “roommate”, it changes what that line means.
