Update: Carl Roottree
In-Game Result
Carl Roottree died in the plane crash near the end of last year, along with his daughters, the Roottree Sisters, and his wife Brenda. You're pretty familiar with that moment in history by now. While the Butler County Times did do a story about the plane crash, and it is in these archives, there's no useful information to your current search. If you'd like to read old articles, including the previous version of this one that mentioned Ernie Jr., feel free to use the TimeTravel interface.

Result History
Carl Roottree
Carl is mentioned in the Butler County times quite often, including an article that also mentions Ernie Jr. Most of the articles concerning Carl are not important. (The plane crash is too recent to appear in these archives.) One announces Carl's marriage to Brenda White in 1978. They were both in their early 20s. Another seems even more frivolous: apparently, in 1981 Carl got quite drunk at a charity event and broke his arm falling down some stairs. The article that also mentions Ernie is from 1996, when Carl took over as the 5th president of the Roottree Candy Company from "Ernie Jr." Ernie Jr. apparently liked to stay out of the spotlight, and never appeared in the Butler County Times other than a few mentions here and there. The article does mention an illness as the reason Ernie Jr. was stepping down.
